Open conservation works and the cultural identity of the historic city community.

“Open conservation works” is a concept for popularizing heritage conservation through various initiatives that increase access to a monument for people during ongoing conservation work. The word “open” refers not only to the actual possibility of entering the site and observing the work “live.” The main intention of the project is to open up to the local community and tourists, sharing the space with specialists and expanding knowledge. The article presents examples of initiatives from three European historic cities, whose main focus was the local community. These activities, by creating a bond between the community and the monument, can influence the sense of cultural identity.

The Fetish of Ruin or the Revitalization of a Monument?

Polish conservation doctrines use terms relating to ruin, most of which are undefined. Nineteenth-century conservation doctrines and the Venice Charter have long lost their relevance, and the restoration and reconstruction procedures of an architectural monument are still rare in Poland due to the fascination with 'permanent ruins'. Reconstruction as a response to the social demand for the care of monuments, refers to the possibility of contemporary use of a monument, and its value is not determined solely by the authenticity of the matter.

The criterion of authenticity in architectural monuments: an example from the design process of the restoration of the Hunting Castle in Promnice and its surroundings

It is obvious that any design problem in a historic building can be solved in many ways. Current views in the sphere of conservation doctrine, as well as the experience of conservation practice, speak for the methodology of selecting engineering solutions in architectural monuments. This involves a case-by-case determination of a set of hierarchical detailed criteria, based on universal definitions of conservation procedures as well as fundamental criteria of authenticity.

Application of aromatic medicinal plants for creating a therapeutic environment that has a sensory impact in the built environment.

The work is based on a study of selected public, urban gardens with sensory features from Poland, supplemented with examples from Great Britain. The focus is primarily on creating spaces with therapeutic values, not only through their direct impact on the recipient, but also through their semantic value. Such an environment with a positive impact may be important especially for city dwellers, exposed to the adverse effects of the urban environment. The work includes a collection of several dozen plant species along with their uses and types of scent (excluding commonly known spice plants). In addition, thematic sets of plants associated with specific medicinal effects are proposed.

The road as an essential element in the composition of contemporary holocaust places of remembrance.

The article deals with the role of the road as a key compositional element in contemporary memorial places, from the perspective of landscape architecture. The author examines the forms and symbolism of paths, which are not only a communication system, but also shape the aesthetics and content of a place. The road organises the space, it is the canvass of the composition which, by delimiting the zones, creates a path leading to the central element of the commemoration – the monument, which is the carrier of ideas and symbols. The aim of this study is to determine the rank of the path in the composition of contemporary memorial sites, thus developing guidelines for the design of these spaces.

Wooden orthodox churches on the polish-ukrainian borderland at the turn of the XXth and XXIst century.

It has been thirty-five years since I began research on wooden Orthodox church architecture. This research, conducted first in Poland and later in western Ukraine, has accumulated a great deal of material for analysis and comparison. The turn of the century can be seen here as an opportunity to compare the state of preservation of this architecture then and now, and the causes of the negative changes occurring in it. This will allow the development of academic and practical methods for the conservation of this common Polish-Ukrainian cultural heritage.

Forester's house in Hajnówka – as a variant of the Community Center.

In the interwar period, Hajnówka transformed from a rural town into an urban center. Its development was based on the dynamically developing wood industry. To meet the needs of the employees of the Wood Works of the State Forests, as well as all residents of the city, the Forester's House was built. The building is an example of a variant of a community center, erected with one professional group in mind and popular at that time. The architectural and functional solutions used are characteristic of the era, but also have many individual features that increase the value of the building as a testimony to the past.

Accessibility of publicly accessible cultural facilities – a literature review.

Accessibility for all users and consideration of their needs are important and popular issues in the design of public buildings. This literature review article aims to identify the current knowledge on the accessibility of cultural facilities. An analysis of 213 scientific publications identified a research niche concerning accessibility, existing barriers, and applied solutions in the context of accessibility of cul tural facilities in Poland, as well as the lack of consideration of their cultural aspect. The article discusses universal design, participatory design, accessibility, and the research methods. The results indicate the need to examine cultural facility accessibility within specific regions considering cultural context and applying participatory design principles and the use of universal and participatory design.
